Monday Rain

“Can you buy me gum?”
“Why?”
“I want to eat it.”
“Have you had gum before?”
“No.”
“It’s for big girls.”
“I am a big girl.” (When she says this, she raises her arms.)
“Okay… But do you know that you’re not supposed to swallow it?”
“Why?”
“You’re only supposed to chew it—like this.” (I imitate a cow moving its jaws.)
“Can you buy it for me?”
“Yes, but you must never eat it. You chew it and then take it out.”
“And put it on the plate?”

  1. Very Funny - nothing like getting stumped by the logic of children! Nice picture of your daughter silhouetted against the spring blossoms.

  4. now…you have given the idea that ‘gum’ can be swallowed. i dislike grown ups like you. All she wanted was to eat ‘gum’. please don’t give it her now. Children can eat ‘gum’(sadness)…while dada like you think about it,,and not eat it..

  5. I can envision her saying those exact words! The salient point being that gum is significant even to the non-gum chewer…. especially when it’s bubble gum!
