Flame of the Forest

When I stepped out of my apartment this morning, I showed my daughter the flowers that had blossomed overnight near our wall. They were daffodils. What I cannot show my child here is dhak or “flame of the forest.” But here’s a photograph of that flower, from the foothills in Himachal, taken by Vijay Parmar.

  1. But what did the child have to say? Did she cry for a flame of the forest–or was she willing to make do with the daffodil. Answer carefully: herein lies the key to your next 16 years.

  2. Doing a Google Image search for “Flame of the Forest” yeilded several different red flowering trees… “Delonix Regia, Ixora coccinea, Butea Frondosa… ” I would like to know which is the one considered sacred.
