The Delicate Matter of Communication
Charu from blogito ergo sum has responded to the question I had raised in my last blog. (Her response appeared on desicritics.org where “Hemingway in Haryana” had also been published.) Charu reports that she had written on her blogsite last year that doctors circumvent the banned prenatal diagnostic test by employing the following code: “Laddu means boy, barfi means girl… let’s meet on Monday means rejoice, you are carrying a son, oh blessed mother; come back on Friday means, you are carrying a daughter, come back for an abortion….” Her post also carries a link to an article which talks about the ways in which ads for ordinary products market an ideology which promotes sons over daughters. (I want to thank Charu but also others who have shared information about their blogsites with me. These include Shivam Vij, Native Tourist, Akshay, and the Badmash.
